Being one of the last almost-complete stretch of tropical wet evergreen forest in the peninsula, the region is a biodiversity hot-spot. But the hard fact is, the discovery and documentation of species, especially herpetofauna, is very lacking. On the whole, the Western Ghats are known for the high levels of species biodiversity and endemism. There are 181 species of amphibians, and 203 species of reptiles(crocodilian, turtles and tortoises, saurian and serpentes). Out of these, most are endemic to the region. In addition, big mammals such as wild boars, deers, antelopes, and bisons also frequent the region. Several species of birds and butterflies can also be spotted here.

The students will be trained in the basics of herpetology and species identification by experts in the field. This will include theoretical and field based sessions.

The main activity will be going on nature trails in order to observe the herpetofauna. The students will learn to map the trails, and observe the locations in which the species are found in order to formulate a report on the species distribution in the area. These trails will be done throughout the day, focusing on when the species are the most active.
